What Sets Us Apart?
The natural world is a tapestry of awe-inspiring wonders, requiring a unique approach to truly bring its essence to life. Our tours are crafted not only for observation but for connection, comprehension, and conservation of the intricate ecosystems we explore. We pledge an expedition that honors the natural world, offering a close encounter with the wildlife that dwells within it.
While we aim to showcase the richness of wildlife in every tour, the unpredictability of nature means sightings can vary. Nevertheless, we guarantee moments of wonder, be it through the playful frolics of sea otters, the collective might of sea lions, or the spectacular breaches of humpback whales.
A portion of revenue from each tour goes to Conservation and Cultural Stewardship programs on and around northern Vancouver Island. These include the North Island Marine Mammal Stewardship Association (NIMMSA) conservation fund, salmon restoration projects, Indigenous cultural programs, and Indigenous tourism training programs.

Also eine klare Empfehlung. Viele Erfolg für die nächsten Saison.read moreread less

Coastal Rainforest Safaris: A Journey in Living Well Some experiences give you a quick thrill; others stay with you forever because they remind you what it means to really live well. That’s what a day with Coastal Rainforest Safaris feels like—not just a tour, but a chance to flourish in the best sense of the word.
The guides are the heart of it. They’re professional, safe, and deeply knowledgeable, yet also warm and welcoming. They balance everything beautifully: giving you enough time with the whales, otters, and eagles so you feel immersed, but never making the day feel rushed or dragged out.
It’s more than sightseeing. The team helps you connect—by sharing stories about the wildlife, the ocean, and the First Nations lands you’re traveling through. You don’t just see incredible animals; you come away with a deeper respect for the place and its rhythms.
And what truly makes it special is the feeling of care on our full day bird tour. You sense it in the way they look after every guest, the way they respect the environment, and the way they create moments, for instance, like eating lunch while orcas call in the background—that you’ll never forget.
In the end, this isn’t just a trip on the water. It’s an experience that builds into who you are: joyful, meaningful, and lasting. If you’re looking for more than just a tour, they went above and beyond to get us out to that island, despite the rough conditions, and stayed out longer because the weather was great. If you want an adventure that leaves you better for having taken it, Coastal Rainforest Safaris is exactly where you’ll find it. And yes, it was so good that we went back for more.read moreread less

Absolutely amazing! Loved seeing the animals This was an amazing experience for my husband and I. The guides were so knowledgeable, kind and patient. We saw many humpbacks, sea otters, sea lions, eagles and many other birds. While I am not knowledgeable on all the birds - we learned so much about them while on this tour. I was also grateful for Tyler sharing his heritage and culture with us.read moreread less

Great cultural and natural experience Tom and Tyler were experienced, informative and really nice to spend the day with.
Lots of whales and sea otter viewing but also eagles, herons, seals and a black bear.
It’s beautiful coast and islands. Tyler explained some areas of cultural and historical significance to his family and how they are working on various projects on their lands.
It’s remote but you’re on the only tour in the area so not chasing around with other people.
Highly recommend!read moreread less

NWeatsout9/27/2025 - Absolutely phenomenal experience doing the Sea Otter and Whale Watching Tour this September with Coastal Rainforest Safaris! Our guides were knowledgeable and friendly, sharing so much of their culture and experiences with us throughout the tour. We were served excellent food that was made by a local cafe and met all of my dietary restrictions with care, as I am celiac and have a slew of other allergies as well. We never felt rushed or pressured with time, and they really followed our lead around what we wanted to see and spend time with over the course of the day. I felt very safe and taken care of in their hands, and we had the chance to see the most incredible amount of wildlife as they took us to special areas around Northern Vancouver Island and the surrounding waters, islands, and protected bays. I would highly recommend this tour company to anyone wanting to get an intimate and powerful experience of the beautiful culture, nature and wildlife that BC has to offer. Amazing Day! Outstanding! I have never seen so much hard to find wildlife in my life. We saw otters, eagles, sea lions, harbor seals, Dall’s porpoises, and an entire group of humpback whales we watched for at least 45 minutes. The custom designed boat was surprisingly comfortable and the gourmet deli lunch was delicious. Porpoise, sea otters, stellar seals, humpback whales, eagles and even a great lunch! Excellent! Jamie greeted us cheerfully and helped us get started with warm pants and float jacket. TMLJM29/07/2025 - An incredible day with great knowledgeable guides and a great lunch but the stars of the show were the wildlife. We saw numerous birds including king fishers, herons and bald eagles Sea lions in fantastic voice and numerous playful otters posing for photos. A black bear looking for food on one of the beaches and numerous humpback whales. At one point the whales were on all sides of the boat, sometimes coming to the surface 3 at a time. A truly memorable experience! My daughter (10) and I went out on the Sea Otters and Whales tour with Coastal Rainforest Safaris as part of the Whales, Otters and Grizzly Bears package, including a day trip with Sea Wolf Adventures to see Grizzly Bears and a stay at Kwa’lilas Hotel in Port Hardy. The entire package was excellent and I would definitely recommend adding the extra day tour with Sea Wolf.
Our day out with Coastal Rainforest Safaris with Andrew and William, and Jamie who helped us prepare for our tour, was a once in a lifetime day! I cannot speak highly enough of the attentive service, the attention to detail and their respectful attitudes towards the guests and also the wildlife we were fortunate enough to see!
The wildlife here is abundant, and the opportunity to be out in this serene wilderness is truly a gift for which I will feel blessed and remember for the rest of my life. This was a lifetime dream come true!read moreread less

Tracy H.7/11/2025 - I dont know how to put in words how amazing this tour was. Picture if you will sitting in a boat on the ocean that is perfectly calm, eating a delicious lunch (with home baked cookies) that is packed by coastal, with whales and porpoises popping up all around the boat coming so close. This trip was a core memory for sure, can't recommend it enough. I did the 6 hour sea otter and whale tour, I actually lost track of how many whales we saw. Additionally we were able to see lots of sea otters, porpoises, sea lions, seals and bald eagles. Our tour guides for the day were AJ and Thomas and they were so wonderful! Carmen B.7/10/2025WOW, what a wonderful experience this was! I do not hestitate recommending this trip. The tour we originally booked was postponed a day due to weather conditions so we decided to book the Whale and Sea Otter trip on the vacant day. Thomas and AJ were our guides and they were so informative and knowledgeable. Thomas shared the Indigenous peoples history of the Islands with us as well which I appreciated so much. The second trip, Puffins and Seabirds was a longer trip with guides Andrew, Will and Scottie, equally as great as the previous day's guides. Not only did we see both species of Puffins, we also saw Humpback, Orca, Minke whales and many species of birds including the Black-footed Albatros. We were also lucky to be a part of the rare bird sighting of a King Eider Duck. One never knows what is going to show up! It was an amazing day. Both day trips provided us with many sightings of just about everything. We were not disappointed. The lunch was delicious and both hot and cold drinks were provided. The seats were comfortable and our safety was always a priority. Bathroom breaks were provided on the facilities on board. The company is very respectful of keeping distance from the birds and mammals.read moreread less

Shearwaters are a common sight on our birding-focused tours all season, but later in the summer and into the fall they often show up on our Sea Otter and Whale Watching tours too.
We may spot Sooty and Short-tailed Shearwaters in the hundreds, and sometimes the thousands, as they move close inshore to feed.

As we close out the year, we have been looking back at some of the rare encounters we had with species beyond our regularly seen sea otters, humpback whales, and sea lions.
Sperm whale (photos 1 and 2): A first for our entire staff. We detected clicks on our hydrophone and later spotted the unmistakable sideways blow of a sperm whale. It was approximately 18 metres long, about twice the length of our boat. While rare, these huge whales are a possibility on our Pelagic Birding tours and our new multi-day September Wildlife Spectacular trip.
Northern Resident super pod (photos 3 and 4): In August, several of our Sea Otter and Whale Watching tours found a super pod of Northern Resident orcas made up of matrilines from clans A, G, and R, with lots of activity and mixing. This super pod was in the remote waters northwest of Port Hardy, and we were the only boat out there with them each day.
Horned puffins (photo 5 and 6): We regularly see hundreds, sometimes thousands, of Tufted Puffins on our Puffin and Seabird tours, but this year we were especially fortunate to see Horned Puffins on every trip. There are estimated to be fewer than 50 breeding pairs in all of British Columbia.
Wolf pups (photos 7 and 8): We had several coastal wolf sightings on our day trips and select multi-day tours. One familiar pack had four pups this year.
King Eider (photo 9): A male King Eider in full breeding plumage is an exceptionally rare sight in British Columbia. Remarkably, this bird was seen on many of our July trips just minutes from the dock. King Eiders are normally found in the High Arctic.
Fin whale (photo 10): The second-largest whale in the world, and typically farther from shore. We were lucky to see two on one Pelagic Birding trip. In this photo you can even spot parasitic copepods on the whale’s flank that can reach 30 cm in length.
Thank you to everyone who joined us this past year. We are already looking forward to what next year brings.

Steller sea lion pups!
Off the north coast of Vancouver Island, these noisy little pups are busy learning how to swim, bicker, and haul out like the adults. We’re fortunate to have several year-round sea lion haulouts that we may visit on our Sea Otter and Whale Watching tours.
Early in the season we might only see a few pups, but as summer goes on more and more return with their mothers from distant breeding rookeries to these local haulouts.
We keep our distance and drift quietly, listening to the growls, squeaks, and splashes echo off the rocks — one of our favourite soundtracks on Vancouver Island North with local Indigenous guides.
