Motion Sickness

Our tours often travel through open ocean conditions, where guests may encounter ocean swell, especially when the vessel slows down to view wildlife. While most people are comfortable on board, we recognize that motion sickness can affect anyone, especially on their first open-water experience.

While our Sea Otter and Whale Watching tours spend more time in sheltered waters, the Puffin and Seabird, Pelagic Birding, and certain days on our September Wildlife Spectacular tours involve more time in open ocean environments.

To help you stay comfortable and enjoy your experience, here are some practical tips:

Before Your Tour

  • Get a good night’s sleep — being well-rested helps your body stay balanced and alert.
  • Eat a light, non-greasy meal before your tour. Avoid spicy, rich, or heavy foods.
  • Stay hydrated, but go easy on caffeine and avoid alcohol.
  • If you’re prone to motion sickness, consider taking Gravol or Dramamine (dimenhydrinate), which are available over the counter.
  • Take it before boarding, following package directions.
  • Choose a non-drowsy version if possible.

On the Boat

  • Keep a positive mindset — worrying about getting sick can actually make symptoms worse. A calm, relaxed attitude can go a long way.
  • Let the crew know if you’re prone to motion sickness — they can help find you a good seat and check in during the tour.
  • Choose a seat near the rear of the vessel, where movement is generally less noticeable.
  • Face forward and focus on the horizon or a stable point in the distance.
  • Dress in layers — temperatures and wind conditions can vary out on the water.
  • Consider wearing acupressure wristbands (e.g., Sea-Bands), which many guests find helpful.

If You Start Feeling Unwell

  • Take slow, deep breaths to settle your system.
  • Avoid prolonged use of binoculars or camera viewfinders, which can intensify nausea.
  • Let the crew know — we’re here to help and may be able to adjust your seating or offer additional tips.
  • We also carry candied ginger on board — many guests find it naturally soothing for mild nausea.

Final Thoughts

  • With just a bit of preparation and the right mindset, most guests feel completely fine and go on to enjoy the unforgettable experience of seeing seabirds, marine mammals, and stunning ocean scenery.
